What are the BC-ADM renewal requirements?

Renewal of certification is accomplished through a combination of practice hours and professional development.  Renewal by exam is not an option for BC-ADM renewal.

  • Hold a current, active and unrestricted RN, RD, RPh, PA, or MD/DO license in a state or territory of the U.S. or the professional, legally recognized equivalent in another country
  • Hold a current BC-ADM® certification
  • Complete the professional development requirements (must be completed within the accrual cycle)
  • Complete a minimum of 1,000 practice hours in advanced diabetes management (must be completed within the accrual cycle)
  • Pay the renewal fee
  • Comply with the renewal audit, if selected during application process.

What is the BC-ADM renewal practice hour requirement?

A minimum of 1,000 practice hours related to the role of an advanced diabetes manager is required. Hours of direct clinical supervision of, or precepting students/residents in, clinical practice may be counted towards practice hours. The direct clinical supervision must be in diabetes care.

Activities that count towards practice hour requirement include:

  • Managing complex patient needs
  • Assisting patients with therapeutic problem‐solving
  • Adjusting medications if within their discipline's scope of practice
  • Treating and monitoring acute and chronic complications and other comorbidities
  • Addressing psychosocial issues
  • Participating in research
  • Mentoring other clinicians in diabetes care

How do I document my hours for BC-ADM renewal?

You will be asked, on the application, to provide the institution, supervisor, start/end date and clinical practice hours for the hours you are reporting. Only candidates selected for audit will be asked to provide supporting documentation to verify the information provided in the application.

What is the fee for the BC-ADM renewal?

The application fee (standard rate) if $800. For 2025, if you are a current ADCES member*, you can enjoy a reduced rate of $500.

*CBDCE does offer discounted fees for individuals that are members of ADCES for 2025; in order to be charged the ADCES membership rate for the initial exam and any retest fees, a candidate must be an active member of the ADCES at the time of the application.  and will be asked to enter their ADCES member ID as part of the renewal application process. 

When do I renew by BC-ADM certification?

Individuals holding the BC-ADM certification must renew every five years and must be renewed prior to their certification expiration date. (MUST apply for renewal prior to the expiration date of their current BC-ADM certificate). A renewal application may be started at any time, but once started, must be completed within 90 days. After that time, it will be closed.

If you missed applying for renewal but are still within 90 days from your expiration date, you may still renew but in addition to the renewal fee, you will need to pay a late fee of $50.

What is the BC-ADM professional development requirement?

Candidates must meet 2 out of 6 Professional Development categories (1-5 may be doubled): Continuing education hours (Category 1), Academic credits (Category 2), Presentations (Category 3), Publication or Research (Category 4), Preceptor (Category 5), and Professional Service (Category 6).

1 Continuing Education Hours 75 contact hours (may be doubled to 150 contact hours) obtained within the 5 years preceding renewal application submission
2 Academic Credits

5 semester credits or 6 quarter credits (may be doubled) taken during the certification period

Academic credits must be converted to hours and used for this category: 1 semester credit=15 hours 1 quarter credit=12.5 hours

3 Presentations Total presentation time of at least 5 hours (may be doubled to 10 hours)
4 Publication or Research Publication:

One article (may be doubled to two articles OR Primary author of content (may be doubled to two) OR Grant writer for a federal, state, or national organization (may be doubled to two grants)

Research:
One IRB project (may be doubled to two projects) OR Completed dissertation, thesis, or graduate level scholarly project (may be doubled to 2 projects) OR Content Reviewer on an IRB, dissertation, thesis, or scholarly project (may be doubled to 2 projects)

5 Preceptor At least 120 hours (may be doubled to 240 hours of precepting)
6 Professional Service At least 100 hours of volunteer service related to diabetes care during the certification cycle (may not be doubled)

 

How do I renew by BC-ADM certification?

You will place your renewal application through Meazure Learning. Log in to your application here https://assessments.meazurelearning.com/cbdce/public/Welcome.aspx?AppSystemID=6 using the username and password from previous renewal or application.  Check the box on the screen for renewal.  Follow the prompts to go through all application steps.

What communications are sent for the BC-ADM renewal?

What is the time frame to renew my BC-ADM certification?

The BC-ADM certification is renewed every 5 years. You will need renew your BC-ADM certification by your certification expiration date. Refer to the BC-ADM Renewal Handbook for what is required to renew and the renewal process.

My contact information has changed. How can I update this?

You will need to contact Meazure Learning to update your contact information for your BC-ADM certification/application.

If you hold both a CDCES and BC-ADM certification, you’ll need to make 2 updates

  1. For your CDCES certification, you’ll update your contact information for your CDCES certification in your CDCES dashboard at www.cbdce.org
  2. For your BC-ADM renewal application/certification, you’ll need to contact Meazure Learning
